چکیده

Introduction: One of the main bottlenecks in restoration projects based on sexual reproduction is post-settlement survival, mainly due to competition for substrate with fleshy algae and predation. Therefore, substrates different shapes materials have been created tested, seeking optimize these processes attractive surfaces larvae structures where recruits are protected from predation, reduced.
Objective: To improve settlement survival two important Caribbean reef-building corals, using coatings substrates. Methods: determine whether properties favourable larval Orbicella annularis, O. faveolata, collected Puerto Morelos, Mexican Caribbean, we evaluated their three weeks six a combination properties. Each coating was designed provide out properties: 1) water repellence (hydrophobicity), 2) phosphorescence-based colour, 3) mineral-enriched surface chemistry. In separate experiment tested single property. Finally, determined annularis faveolata seven weeks. Results: The high hydrophobicity light blue phosphorescent microparticles red-orange resulted higher when compared other (30.8 - 66.7 % higher). No significant differences were found number settled water-repellence independently. Post-settlement time low, maximum 34 days after 42 faveolata. Conclusions: terms settlement, appears play an essential role choice microhabitat both But individually did not generate advantage settlement. Moreover, some chemical components associated may be counterproductive polyps over time.

RNA-Seq of the Caribbean reef-building coral Orbicella faveolata (Scleractinia-Merulinidae) under bleaching and disease stress expands models of coral innate immunity

Climate change-driven coral disease outbreaks have led to widespread declines in coral populations. Early work on coral genomics established that corals have a complex innate immune system, and whole-transcriptome gene expression studies have revealed mechanisms by which the coral immune system responds to stress and disease. The present investigation expands bioinformatic data available to stu...

Low regeneration of lesions produced by coring in Orbicella faveolata

The extraction of tissue-skeleton cores from coral colonies is a common procedure to study diverse aspects of their biology, water quality or to obtain environmental proxies. Coral species preferred for such studies in Caribbean reefs belong to the genera Orbicella. The long term effects of coring in the coral colony are seldom evaluated and in many Caribbean countries this practice is not regu...

Quantifying cryptic Symbiodinium diversity within Orbicella faveolata and Orbicella franksi at the Flower Garden Banks, Gulf of Mexico

The genetic composition of the resident Symbiodinium endosymbionts can strongly modulate the physiological performance of reef-building corals. Here, we used quantitative metabarcoding to investigate Symbiodinium genetic diversity in two species of mountainous star corals, Orbicella franksi and Orbicella faveolata, from two reefs separated by 19 km of deep water. We aimed to determine if the fr...

Low pH reduces the virulence of black band disease on Orbicella faveolata

Black band is a deadly coral disease found worldwide, which may become more virulent as oceanic conditions continue to change. To determine the effects of climate change and ocean acidification on black band disease virulence, Orbicella faveolata corals with black band were exposed to different temperature and pH conditions. Results showed a significant decrease in disease progression under low...

Comparative demography of two common scleractinian corals: Orbicella annularis and Porites astreoides

Background Studies directed at understanding the demography and population dynamics of corals are relatively scarce. This limits our understanding of both the dynamics of coral populations and our capacity to develop management and conservation initiatives directed at conserving such ecosystems. Methods From 2012 to 2014, we collected data on the growth, survival, and recruitment rates of two...
